Best Walks for the May Bank Holiday 2026

The May bank holiday weekend is one of the finest times of year to be out on the UK's trails. Long days, spring wildflowers, and the first real warmth of the year make this the perfect opportunity to get outside and explore. Whether you're after a gentle family stroll or an ambitious day in the hills, here are the best walks to enjoy this bank holiday weekend.

1. Mam Tor & the Great Ridge, Peak District

One of England's finest ridge walks, the Great Ridge between Mam Tor and Lose Hill offers panoramic views over the Hope Valley and is manageable for most fitness levels. The circular route from Castleton takes in the ridge, the ancient hill fort on Mam Tor, and the pretty village of Castleton at the end. Perfect for a bank holiday day out from Sheffield, Manchester, or the Midlands.

Distance: 10km circular. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Time: 3–4 hours. Tip: Arrive by 8am — Castleton car parks fill by 9am on bank holidays.

2. Catbells, Lake District

The most popular family mountain in England, Catbells above Derwentwater offers a superb bank holiday walk with spectacular views. The ascent from Hawse End is straightforward and the summit views over Derwentwater and Borrowdale are magnificent. Take the Keswick Launch across the lake for a memorable start to the day.

Distance: 6km circular. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Time: 2–3 hours. Tip: Use the Keswick Launch ferry to avoid parking chaos.

3. Pen y Fan, Brecon Beacons

Wales' most popular mountain is a superb bank holiday objective. The route from Pont ar Daf is well-marked and the views from the 886m summit over the Brecon Beacons are spectacular on a clear May day. The wildflowers on the approach are at their finest in May.

Distance: 8km return. Difficulty: Moderate. Time: 3–4 hours. Tip: The Pont ar Daf car park fills early — arrive before 8am or use the Storey Arms alternative.

4. Box Hill, Surrey Hills

For those in or near London, Box Hill in the Surrey Hills is the classic bank holiday walk. The chalk summit offers views over the Weald, the stepping stones across the River Mole are a family favourite, and the National Trust café at the top is a welcome reward. Easily accessible by train from London Victoria.

Distance: 6km circular. Difficulty: Easy. Time: 2 hours. Tip: Take the train from London Victoria to Box Hill & Westhumble station — no parking stress.

5. Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh

For those in Scotland, Arthur's Seat above Edinburgh is a superb bank holiday walk. The ancient volcano rises 251m above the city and the views over Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and the surrounding hills are extraordinary on a clear May day. Accessible from the city centre on foot.

Distance: 4km circular. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Time: 1.5–2 hours. Tip: Go early — it's very popular on bank holidays.

6. The Malvern Hills, Worcestershire

The Malvern Hills offer superb ridge walking with panoramic views over the Severn Valley and Welsh hills. The main ridge from North Hill to Worcestershire Beacon is a superb bank holiday walk, and the town of Great Malvern at the foot of the hills offers excellent post-walk refreshment. Accessible by train from Birmingham and Worcester.

Distance: 10km ridge walk. Difficulty: Moderate. Time: 3–4 hours.

7. Dovedale, Peak District

The limestone gorge of Dovedale in the Peak District is one of England's most beautiful valleys and a perennial bank holiday favourite. The stepping stones, crystal-clear River Dove, and dramatic limestone spires make this a superb family walk. The full circular route taking in Thorpe Cloud adds a satisfying summit.

Distance: 8km circular. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Time: 2–3 hours. Tip: Arrive before 9am — the Dovedale car park is notorious for bank holiday queues.

Bank Holiday Walking Tips

Popular trails are extremely busy on bank holidays — arrive early, use public transport where possible, and consider less well-known alternatives if your first choice is packed. Always carry waterproofs (May weather is unpredictable), plenty of water, and snacks. And make sure your feet are ready for a long day — fresh, cushioned hiking socks from Stride Outdoors will keep you comfortable from the first step to the last. Happy bank holiday walking!
