The Best Spring Hiking Trails in the UK
Aktie
Spring is a magical time to be on the UK's trails. After the grey months of winter, the landscape bursts back to life, bluebells carpet ancient woodland floors, lambs dot the hillsides, and the first warm days of the year draw walkers back to the hills with renewed energy. Here are the UK's finest spring hiking trails to enjoy from March through May.
1. Bluebell Woods, Ashridge Estate, Hertfordshire
The ancient beech woodland of the Ashridge Estate on the Chiltern escarpment hosts one of England's finest bluebell displays from late April to mid-May. The carpet of blue beneath the fresh green canopy is one of the most beautiful sights in the British countryside. The circular walk from Aldbury through the bluebell woods to the Bridgewater Monument is a spring classic.
Best time: Late April to mid-May. Distance: 8km circular. Difficulty: Easy.
2. The Brecon Beacons, Wales
Spring transforms the Brecon Beacons. The moorland turns vivid green, waterfalls run full after winter rain, and the hills are alive with skylarks and curlews. The ridge walk from Pen y Fan to Corn Du is superb in spring, and the Waterfall Country near Pontneddfechan is at its most dramatic with the rivers running high.
Best time: March to May. Distance: Various. Difficulty: Moderate.
3. The Lake District, Cumbria
Spring in the Lake District is glorious, the fells turn green, the tarns sparkle, and the summer crowds haven't yet arrived. The Langdale Pikes, Helvellyn, and the quieter eastern fells around Haweswater offer superb spring walking. The daffodils around Ullswater in March are a particular highlight, Wordsworth's inspiration is still very much alive.
Best time: March to May. Distance: Various. Difficulty: Moderate to challenging.
4. The South Downs Way, East Sussex
The chalk downland of the South Downs is at its best in spring, carpeted with wildflowers and alive with butterflies and skylarks. The section from Eastbourne to Alfriston offers stunning views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, and the downland flowers, cowslips, orchids, and harebells, are at their finest from April onwards.
Best time: April to June. Distance: Day sections from 8–16km. Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
5. Glen Coe, Scottish Highlands
Spring arrives later in the Scottish Highlands, but when it does, Glen Coe is extraordinary. The snow retreats from the high tops through April and May, revealing vivid green hillsides and rushing waterfalls. The Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail) walk is a superb spring route, and the Aonach Eagach ridge offers one of Scotland's finest scrambles in settled spring conditions.
Best time: April to June. Distance: Various. Difficulty: Moderate to challenging.
6. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Wales
Spring is the finest season for the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Wildflowers, thrift, sea campion, and bluebells, line the clifftops, seabirds return to their nesting colonies, and the Atlantic is at its most dramatic. The section between St Davids and Fishguard is particularly spectacular in spring.
Best time: April to June. Distance: Day sections from 8–20km. Difficulty: Moderate to challenging.
